WEIGHT LOSS

For many people, their identity and their hair are closely intertwined. Unfortunately, as a result of genetics and other factors, many people begin to lose their hair long before they are ready to do so.

PRP

Genetics, hormonal changes, medical conditions, trauma and stress can all lead to hair loss.  Platelet Rich Plasma therapy, or PRP, can be an excellent option for patients with thinning hair. PRP consists of platelets that are rich in growth factors which can induce growth of any cell, in this case hair root cells (papilla cells).

PRP (platelet-rich plasma) therapy for hair loss is a three-step treatment in which a person’s blood is drawn, processed, and then injected into the scalp. PRP injections trigger natural hair growth and maintain it by increasing blood supply to the hair follicle and increasing the thickness of the hair shaft.

There is no downtime with this procedure. You can resume normal activity immediately after the treatment. You may experience a slight headache for up to 24 hours.

TOPICAL TREATMENT

Topical treatment, like Minoxidil (Rogaine®), has also been shown to be effective in the treatment of both male and female hair loss.  Almost all patients report a slowing in the progression of their hair loss with this topical treatment, while some patients even report the growth of new hair. Although a prescription is not necessary for this treatment it is most effective when used as part of a doctor guided hair loss regimen.

ORAL THERAPY

There are several different medications to help those experiencing hair loss.  Options available to both men and women are vitamin supplements of folate and biotin. Both are necessary components to support the growth of hair.

Another oral treatment, only available to men with a prescription, is Finasteride. Although, it has been shown to be highly effective in slowing the progression of male pattern baldness, it can also decrease libido and should therefore be thoroughly discussed with your doctor before commencing treatment.
